My fiance and I recently adopted a 7 year old Mountain Feist. I got the impression that his family could no longer afford to keep him since they had lost their house and had to move into a trailer. (Not that there's anything wrong with living in a trailer, but I don't think they really wanted to leave their house.)
Anyway, this dog is already house trained, which is wonderful. He also loves children and other dogs. I'm really enjoying him. He is small with short hair. He's very easy to take care of, and he's very well mannered.
The only problem I am having is that he is a loud barker. Whenever someone comes to the door, he barks and barks. He only weighs 27 lbs, but his bark sounds like that of a much larger dog. He also barks when he gets excited because I'm going to take him on a walk.
I don't know how to get him to stop barking. I've always had golden retrievers in the past, and none of them barked very much. I tried spraying him in the face with a spray bottle filled with just plain water. He doesn't like it and it gets him to stop barking temporarily, but I feel a little mean doing it, and I'm not sure it will work as a long term solution.
Any advice? Thanks!
