What is the best way to introduce a new puppy to my 2 resident dogs? I just brought a new puppy home 2 days ago and my 2 other dogs don't seem to like her. They are all golden retrievers and have always gotten along with each other. HELP!

Hi there

Congrats on getting (or planning on getting) the new puppy!

Take the initial introduction slowly. All dogs should be on leashes, so if things get out of hand, you are in control. Introduce the puppy to one dog at a time.

Never leave a new puppy alone with your other older dogs during the get-acquainted stage. Puppies don’t understand the pecking order and they haven’t acquired the necessary submissive skills. The older dog may give signals of dominance, but the puppy doesn’t know how to read them. This situation often results in injury with the older dog biting or pinning down the younger animal.

It’s important to provide equal attention to both the new and established pets. This includes one-on-one time, appropriate exercise and play time, and lots of love. If it appears that the new animal’s getting all the attention, the older dog may become jealous and redirect it’s jealousy aggression toward the puppy and cause injury.

Here's a web site where you can read more about introducing a puppy:

Best of luck!

Welcome to the Dogs Board doglover502...and congratulations on your new "furbaby". As usual, Patty has given you some great information. I've done the "introduction" thing a couple of times. When I had my beloved Jebu and brought home my beloved Maxwell, we thought that we would have to take him back to the shelter. Jebu was "so" upset and we felt terrible about bringing this puppy into his life to disrupt it. But they soon became best friends and inseperable. Your baby is so may seem as if the older dogs don't like her but I'm sure that's not the case...they just have to get "used" to having this little thing in their midst...LOL...

I'm so glad that you've decided to join us here on this fun and informative Board. Good luck and I'm looking forward to hearing many "puppy" stories.
