Not happy about it, either.
I'm so sorry this happened to you....of course this has to stop.
Many years ago we had a black lab, Lady, and we had a trainer come in to break her of some bad habits she had, like biting.
I'm sorry that Jake bit you, it sounds like he was having a bad morning that day. While I think everyone has a bad day and a nip isn't necessarily a sign that he needs stringent training, I'd say with the barking issues and such, too, that it might be a good idea to have him go through a class just to see if there's anything you guys can do to help break him of some of his habits. I definitely think your husband could go to the classes and then bring home the knowledge to you if you're not able to attend. As long as you pick up on any new training techniques and the two of you stay consistent, you should still get the full benefit of the training.
This may not be the best advice as far as barking goes, but my dog LOVES to hear herself talk, so we make a game out of it. DH is almost deaf, so I use her as a tool to get his attention for me if I'm too lazy to walk over and tap him on the shoulder myself :) Other times, she might start in and we'll say stupid stuff like "Is that so, what happened then?" Usually this gets her to stop. If it's something outside that gets her attention, I'll just make her sit and shake hands and telll her to do something else to distract her instead and this usually works.
