Question on fleas

HI Ladies.  I give Rudi a monthly pill,  Trifexis that targets fleas also.

First time dog mom and I didn't know for sure what I was looking at over a week ago, but vacuumed and didn't see anymore, then yesterday again I saw it in her plush chair she loves and it was a flea.  I was able to take the cover off and wash it,  where she sits is like a plush lambs wool so the little critters loved it there.   Alas, I couldn't kill the flea it jumped off in the kitchen before I could kill it.    I had the sucker in a napkin and as fast as I was trying to smash it, it had 9 lives and then some.

So do fleas just up and die if they aren't biting Rudi or I or do they find other food sources?   I am such a wimp when it comes to insects and bugs.  I had a mouse last month and freaked out totally from that one.   Trying to tell myself the cost of having Rudi might mean some bugs/fleas at times.

I can't see any evidence of fleas anywhere else,  I washed the towels she sleeps on, and vacuumed the carpet,  Rudi isn't scratching and I am not getting bit as I sit on the couch.

Should I be setting off flea bombs or something?   We live in the living room the whole day if we aren't asleep or walking.

Any suggestions?  I looked online but didn't really find much except advertising for treatments.

thanks I really appreciate any help,  hugs,  Josie

I haven't had a flea infestaton myself, but I've seen recommendations in the past for Fleabusters:

There's a tab with instructions, but if you're not seeing them everywhere and aren't getting bitten, I don't know if you want to take this level of action against them. I hope others who have been through it will chime in!

Thanks Jenn.

I sure have heard some horror stories from friends on fleas,  itching as I sit here in fact.   Just in my mind though.

I gave Rudi a bath with just her regular shampoo,  and nothing jumped off her in the bathtub.

I tend to worry on way too many things, so hoping I can just chill out and monday morning call the vet and get her in as I have a couple other questions too and her nails need trimmed.    If the house is infested, I may just pay the big bucks and call in a professional as would never forgive myself if the home treatment to get rid of them would poison her.  I have limited living space so short of going to a hotel there is no other place to go if I have to keep her off the carpets etc.

I was just wondering if there would be obvious signs she had them, like her digging at herself?

thanks,  Josie

Update on Rudi:  No fleas on her as took her into the vet today.   I live in central Ohio and he said they have been awful here, he even had them in his house and never has before.   They sold some spray stuff there for carpets and couches, so I bought it and sprayed it around the room her chair was in that I saw the fleas on those 2 times.   Took her on quick walk, came home and ran sweeper.

Funny to be wishing for freezing temps overnight and enough of a winter that all these critters get killed like nature intended over the winter.   Us Ohioans knew there would be a price to that mild winter we had.

Thinking of come next summer add a flea collar to the monthly Trifexis pill.   Wait and see I guess.
