Hi,  you all were so helpful back when I Rudi moved into my life March 2011.     It was a roller coaster ride and several months before she was completely potty trained but it has oh so been worth it.   I can't imagine being widowed and retired without my best bud curled up next to me.

And last December I did something I  never thought I would do:   Rudi is now sleeping in my bed.  I wasn't raised with any pets and all I could see was the negatives, but did some changing around in my room and took my cherished quilt off the bed so my little girl is now sleeping under the covers or else laying on top of the quilt.    Twice she jumped down, which a short legged dachshund jumping down off a high bed is not recommended.    I don't want stairs in there as I want her to stay in bed with me, not roaming the house while I am in a deep sleep.

And one night she woke me up gagging, so I grabbed an old towel I intentionally put in my room and caught the vomit in that,  and we continued sleeping the night away.

Thanks again ladies for answering tons of questions and helping us to make this a happy dog lover home.

hugs,  Josie

Hugs back to you Josie....and Happy Birthday to Rudi!!!  I can't believe that she's already two years old!!

When DH and I first got married he knew that my ^Jebu^ slept with me; he said that even though he adored Jebu he didn't want him sleeping with us.  I agreed....and that lasted all of one night.....LOL....  We've always had more than one large dog but they always slept with us.

This stopped when we moved to Virginia because we now had hardwood floors in the bedroom.  We were afraid that if the dogs jumped off the bed they would hurt themselves.  By that time ^Samantha^ was already 12 years old and never jumped off the bed, so she continued to sleep with us.  As she became more elderly DH would pick her up and put her on the bed in the evening and take her off in the morning.

When we got Cleo we never allowed her on the bed only because she would jump off during the night.  She's content on her bed (one of three....).

Just a suggestion...even before Samantha became a senior dog, she always had a problem with "leaking".  When she was younger it would happen every few months, but as she got older it became more frequent until, for the last 6 months of her life, we had to have her sleep in her own bed.

One thing I did was buy a waterproof mattress pad.  The cheap ones are plastic-coated but the more expensive ones are just coated and they don't cause you to sweat during the night.  It was a blessing because if Samantha did have a leaking incident at least I could just change the sheets and didn't have to worry about cleaning the mattress itself.

What we do for our dogs.....
