Pet Door Advice needed!
Sat, 11-09-2013 - 8:43am

I was going to install a plain pet door - but one major concern is how to keep out racoons/possums, etc!?

Im lately hearing about these electronic types, now suddenly, which run on either a special color or via the microchip, back of the neck.    My 3 cats, however, have never worn collars & I fear if they would take to such!

Anyone have experience with such & can provide info?   thanks!!!

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with pet doors...although sometimes I wish I did....LOL...  It would be so much easier if my Cleo could just go in and out as she wanted.

I have heard of the ones that run from a special collar...that way once the animal is either in or out the door locks.  I do imagine that, given where you live, there might be the chance of another animal getting into the door, especially if they smell food.

Hopefully someone else with experience will chime in.  I'll check over on the Dogs Board.

We used to have pet doors when our three cats were indoor/outdoor (that was over 20 years ago, though, well before the radio-controlled doors), and only once did we have a racoon get in through the door (that's a long story for another time). However, we did have stray cats come in so that wasn't cool... Also, we had one cat who simply would NOT use the door since she couldn't see what was on the other side!

Our cats did wear flea collars, but not willingly or happily, and one was skilled at losing them as soon as she was outside. I suspect those radio chip collars are pretty pricey so you wouldn't want to be replacing them if you have a Houdini cat as well.

The microchip idea sounds intriguing, especially as they are now recommended so you can identify your wee beastie if it is ever lost and picked up by the dog warden, etc. Can they tune the door to the microchip, and would there any side effects? I don't know enough about them to know.
