Hi Everyone, I have a beautiful Bradford Pear tree in the front of my house that we have just discovered has woodpecker damage. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can keep them away from the tree?

I live near a park and we checked with the park ranger to find out what we could do about the woodpeckers (and skunks) and were told to treat for insects. Once the insects are gone, the woodpeckers will move somewhere else.

Ours left pretty fast once we got the insects treated.

We own a log home and a couple of years ago found woodpecker damage on one of our deck railing.  We realized that carpenter bee had lain some eggs in the wood....and the woodpecker was trying to get at the larvae.  We now treat for carpenter bees every year and have had no more instances.

Please be sure to let us know what you find out.

I googled adn found this helpful page: http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/woodpecker-damage-trees.htm as well as this one http://birding.about.com/od/birdbehavior/a/Stop-Woodpecker-Damage.htm

I personally opt for feeding them (our peckers love those suet blocks and we don't have significant pecking in our trees as a  result) --- and have your pear checked to see if there are a) insects that the woodpeckers are after --- may need to treat as the insects could also be a threat to your tree) and b) infection by insects, mold, etc as a result of the pecking (again, treatment may be required)...

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! We got an inspection and do have insects. They were treated and hopefully the tree will be okay.

Great....sometimes you just have to check out a few things before you can get the answer you want....
