HI!! I'm at my wits end!!

My boyfriend's it is now suddenly terrified of me after an incident yesterday with the darn fire alarm thingy in our home.. We have like three.. and with dinner one went off.. I didn't know where they were and was rushing around the house trying to find them.. I found one but it didn't turn it off.. and being frustrated i yelled.. cussed a bit too.. then finally found the stupid thing. got it turned off

My cat and the dog had hid when it went off.

SOOO boyfriend comes home.. Bella, my boyfriends' pit, was all upset and scared and whinning.. we figured we would need to take her to vet.

I just came home and needed to take her for her walk... bent over and she freaked out.. curled up all submissvely and whining like she had been beaten.. she never has.. I worked with Dobie Rescue for years and abused dogs....

Now she is hiding in her crate.. I can't get near her with out her whining and rolling over... I"ve even tried treats and lunch meat.. but nothing.. I"m at a complete loss.. with all my years of abused dogs.. nothing is working with her.

Please help!

I can't stand her being this way.. in pain or just scared.. it's breaking my heart.

Hi Loren....I'm so sorry that you are going through this right now with poor Bella.

First of all...calm down.  Dogs get frightened...some more than others...and it sometimes takes a while for them to calm down.  However, if you are nervous then Bella will sense this.

If I were you I would just leave her be for a while...try to do everything that you normally do.  Feed her, walk her, give her treats.  If you make a big deal out of the fact that she is scared it will reinforce her fear.

I know it's normal to want to "baby" them...last evening we had a bad thunderstorn and my lab/mix, Cleo, was very frightened because she can't stand loud noises.  She came to me and I started to pet her to calm her down...but then I just left her alone.  She laid down in front of me for a while and once she realized that the noise had stopped, she went to her bed.

I'm sure that the smoke alarm was frightening to Bella and your raised voice also scared her....through no fault of your own.  I've done the same thing.  I'm sure she'll come around...just give her some time.

Please be sure to keep us updated.

Laura... thank you so very much for your help.

We took Bella to the vet today.. she has a very very very very... severe environmental allergy... so the vet said that is causing her pain and the whimpering.. along with a yeast infection in her paws.. that she licks and then puts on her belly... sooooo now we have some meds to give to her and hopefully all will be on the upswing in the next day or two.

vet said she was fine from the fire alarm/me yelling thing it just coincided with the incident.. I really do appreciate your help! I feel a lot better!

Thank you so much for the update Loren...i'm glad that Bella is now being treated.  Many times if a dog acts in an aggressive manner, out of the norm, it could be because of pain or illness.  Poor little Bella was so uncomfortable and just didn't know how to "tell" you.  I'm glad you opted for the vet...

Many hugs to your little girl and I hope she's all better soon.
