Hi All - I moved into a new home that has a lot of desert backyard.  I noticed lizards (I'm in Arizona) and lots and lots of birds so I started putting a seed block out above my waterfall feature.  It attracts doves, sparrows, colorful finches and red  cardinals.  I LOVE watching the birds!  I also put another feeder on the side of my house where my kitchen window looks out.  I'm enjoying the bird and lizard life so much!  I also saw a Roadrunner a few times.  Not so excited about him because he eats the lizards!  Oh and I have a quail family that visits daily.  I'm just having a great time.  I believe that there are Javelina visiting my front yard as evidenced by the poop left behind but I haven't actually seen them.  My house is across the street from a big wash with lots of trees etc.  The link below shows the waterfall with the seed bell above it.  The birds were eating through it too fast so I bought a giant seed block now.  Oh and I have a hummingbird feeder for all the hummers that are around.  Life is good!  Just love my new house and all the wildlife!

Wow....you really have a great mixture of wildlife there.....I love watching the wildlife too...although I mostly have lots of squirrels eating my birdseed....LOL...

That's a great idea to hang the seed bell over the pond....I wish I could work out a way to do that...maybe it might discourage some of the squirrels but I doubt it.

I used to have a hummingbird feeder but I just wasn't maintaining it too well....I always worried that the nectar would go bad if I didn't clean it enough.  And I also don't know what Cleo would do.....she "stalks" the squirrels so I wouldn't want her trying to hurt any birds.

We have lots of skinks...and Cleo is always trying to get at them.  She caught one a few months ago and I was so upset....but there are so many all over my deck and patio that's it's hard to keep her away.

I agree --- putting that seed bell over water is bound to keep at least some of the larger beasties away (we have issues with raccoons eating our seed blocks)... And maybe even the chipmunks (although the local feral cat seems to have trimmed that population down significantly. Squirrels, on the other hand, are so inventive, I don't think there's a way in Hades to keep them away from food if they want it bad enough!

You must have a LOT of birds to be going through that block that fast!

Love your pond and waterfall! Do the birds use the pond to drink and bathe in as well? I put a basin at the top of my waterfall that the water flows through and the birds love it, and it's so nice to watch them splashing around in it.

My bird feeder is hanging on a shepherd's hook, and it has six ports with a "squirrel guard" around it.  The squirrels have learned to tilt the bird feeder so that most of the bird seed ends up on the ground and is easier to get to.....LOL.....  I have a picture that I need to crop....I'll show you my usual squirrel "party"....

Hi Laura - no squirrels here. Our desert squirrels are ground squirrels and don't climb. I think those are the lizards I have - skinks. They're sleek and long. At my last home, I had a lot of gekos. Those I really liked. They just hung out on the patio roof and ate all the bugs that flew around. Luckily Emmy hasn't been into the wildlife in this house so far. I think she's just getting old - LOL!

I'm still a bit urban to have racoons or chipmunks luckily. I haven't seen anything other than the birds and lizards so far.

Thanks Evelyn! The birds like to drink from the waterfall part of the water but don't do anything with the pond part. Too deep I ssuspect.

LOL! Well my gigantic doves have learned to try and hang on to the bird rests and tilt the feeder to drop the seed on the ground so they can get to it easier. Inventive birds!!
