It's very cold here and my bird feeder is getting a lot of activity. Do you feed the birds? Do you feed them year round? Do you mind the squirrels?

I have my birdfeeder set up so that I can easily look out to watch the activity....and I feed them year-round.  Unfortunately Cleo also loves birdseed and it's a battle to keep her out from under the birdfeeder.  I don't really mind the squirrels....I love wildlife and that's just a part of it.

WE also have feeders up year round but we tend to feed more in winter when the food supply is more critical to the birds.

I have no issues with squirreld, per se (except the one that chewed a hole in one feeder to get at teh sunflower seeds) but they do mean we have to reload the feeders daily! Even though we supply them with piles of food on the ground, ears of corn, and the like, they still empty the feeders as well.

Our biggest bird-feeder poachers, though, are racoons, who will devastate teh area trying toget the suet blocks out of the woodpeckker feeders... As cute as racoon kits are, they are murder on a brd feeding regimen.

In NJ I used to have a squirrel feeder too, and a very large bird feeder.  The squirrels would actually take the whole ear of corn off the peg, and then ravage the bird feeder.  Our bird feeder was a gazebo type with a decorative top that came off to fill; one day I couldn't find the top anywhere....I guess ome of the squrrels wanted it to decorate his nest....LOL....
