I saw a woodpecker pecking

Yesterday I was riding my bike down through an older neighborhood and I stopped when I heard a tapping noise by a large tree in one of the yards. I went to investigate and I got to see for the first time ever, a woodpecker pecking away. I am not typically a big nature enthusiast but I have to say it was really interesting to watch.

I think woodpeckers are fascinating as well... How they don't get headaches from banging against wood, for example! LOL And they can walk down a tree upside down!

We have downy and hairy woodpeckers in our yard at our suet feeders regularly (and man, do they look alike!). But I think the coolest woodpecker I have ever seen was a pileated woodpecker when we lived in Florida! That bird really makes a noise when he/she pecks, adn he/she was HUGE!

Congratulations on your first woodpecker!

I love "almost" all wildlife....but I worry about woodpeckers because I live in a log home.  The first time we had an issue was when a carpenter bee laid eggs in our deck railing and a woodpecker attempted to get to them...pecking off a large piece of the railing in the process.  Since we started getting our home sprayed for carpenter bees we haven't had this issue.

What "did" happen this week is that the deer have found our front landscaping...so my flowers are decimated.  But...it could be worse.  This is the first year we've had real problems...and DH sprayed the landscaping this weekend with some awful-smelling liquid....so hopefully the rest of my plants are safe....LOL....

Just out of curiousity I browsed through the pictures you posted and was able to identify the unusual bird on my wood fence as the Downy. I have seen it from time to time and always wondered about it but never gave it a thought it might be a woodpecker. I always thought that woodpeckers looked just like "Woody" and had no idea there were other kinds.

Thank you!

Thank you for the pictures. I checked out that website and now I find myself trying to identify other birds. I could never understand "bird watching" but here I am doing it. I am really enjoying it.
