and there was one place along the highway where we saw four or five dead deer! I was wondering if it was that hard of a winter there...

That always saddens me.
I know --- and for some reason, little animals tend to run in FRONT of the car instead of back to the side of the road. And birds --- my gosh, WHY do birds fly in FRONT of me? I find myself slowing down adn swerving about to avoid teh smallest beasts.
I think you are right --- given teh number of racoons adn squirrels we see dead on teh road, I wonder if some of the locals AIM for them. We are rural, after all...

I get that fright with birds too....some of them seem to fly so low - right in front of my grill.
