In the front of our house, there is a "flower" bed of hostas, azaleas and a dogwood tree. It's pretty thick in the way of vegetation and so very difficult to see into. But of late, on the front porch, on the sidewalk leading from the front porch, in our driveway and even in the road in front of our neighbor's driveway, there has been a female mallard, sitting. She actually needs to be shooed out of the way of vehicles! And when she finally gets the hint and shoos, accorting to our neighbor, she runs/flies for that flower bed. We are thinking a nest? But we haven't seen it, and her being so solidly on paved surfaces, is confusing to say the least.
The same neighbor who has been doing the early morning shooing so he can leave his driveway for work, says he has seen a male mallard in our backyard so that may be Dad --- is she estranged? She's a long way from the lake --- and from him!
So being the Google Diva that I am, I found this site. APparently this is "normal" for a mallard: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/about/faqs/birds/nestpot/nest.htm
