My husband and I are wanting to get a puppy next summer and we are not sure what to get. Anyone that is knowledgeable, please help. We live in West Tennessee. Hot summers, moderate winters. We want a large dog, short hair. We have a fenced back yard but want a primarily inside dog. We have a 4 year old boy. No slobbering (like a St Bernard) Loves children, very affectionate, playful, and intelligent (easy to train). I am willing to walk him on leash 30 min/day. We are thinking about a Smoth Haired Collie. Would this fit?? Any other ideas?? Thanks! Tracy B

The breed selector is a great place to start!

Remember to read up on any breed that you are interested in! Make sure you understand the pitfalls of the breed such as genetic diseases, etc. 25% of shelter dogs are purebreds that are given up because the owners didn't know what to expect.

Good Luck!!

Hi there Tracy B,

When I was growing up, we had a dog that was golden retreiver/yellow lab (a picture of Kelly can be found here) and she was the most laid back, lovable, family dog we had ever had. We also have had a yellow lab and black lab. Normally black labs are the most hyper of them all, but we got quite lucky on this one (she was so mellow my stepmom took her to the vet to make sure she was ok *LOL*)

So, from my point of view, a great family dog breed to look into is golden retreivers and/or labs.

Hope that helps some.
