Mom's cat has cancer

Hi everyone. I need to ask a question and I'm sorry if it causes stress for anyone. My mother's cat (Sissy-13 years old) has cancer and she refuses to put her down even though the vet has recommended it. Mom feels like she would be killing her best friend. We are trying to make her understand that she is only going to make Sissy suffer and that the humane thing to do would be to put her to sleep. Are we wrong about this?

Dear Zcat, welcome to our little corner of the web.

How my heart breaks for you, your Mom, and her beloved Sissy.  I think most of us have gone through having to make that heartbreaking decision.  Some worry that they did it to soon, while others torture themselves (like me) that they waited to long.  It's such a personal decision.

I don't know what type of cancer Sissy is dealing with, but from what little I know, some can either be very painful, or pain free.  Does Sissy's Vet suggest euthansia because of the pain involved, or that there will be a slow and lingering decline? (sorry)   Gosh, if your dear Mom is so torn over this heartbreaking decision, there's really nothing anyone can say or do.  I'm hoping there will come a time when she knows (from Sissy's heart) that her beloved is ready to cross over.  Having to make that decision, is the most painful ... yet unselfish thing a furmom can do for her beloved.

Oh Zcat, you are not wrong to be concerned for your Mom and Sissy.  Please have your Mom talk with Sissy.  Have her listen (with her heart) to Sissy's wishes.  If there comes a time when she's ready to release her sweet angel from her tired body, she wouldn't be "killing" her best friend.... she will be giving her the greatest gift ... releasing her from her pain.

Please know that our hearts are with you, your Mom, and Sissy.

With my heart,
Lin, Whisper's Mom
