My dear Ronin is gone

I am so upset right now I can barely think. On Saturday night, my beloved cat Ronin was playing and running like he always does. In what I thought was a classic clumsy move of his, I heard the crash of our birds cage falling over in our dining room (bird is just fine). No sign of Ronin, he took off for the basement. I cleaned up the mess and thought nothing more of it. Flash forward to Sunday, my husband went to the basement to do laundry and found Ronin's body. He had been dead for hours. At first we were confused. Was he poisoned? Heart attack? He wasn't even 2 years old. The only thing I can think of is that he may have choked on something. When he crashed into the bird's cage, I think he was panicking because he couldn't breathe. Then he dashed to the basement, passed out and died while I was unaware upstairs cleaning up the mess. I feel so guilty. If only I would have looked into the basement I would have seen his body. I have no clue what he could have choked on. We have a 1 year old daughter and keep small things off of the floor. No poisons are in the house for the same reason. I am so heartbroken I can barely function. He was my cuddle buddy and I let him down. The thought of him dying alone in my cold dark basement breaks my heart. Sorry this is so long but I just had to get this off of my chest.
