Oh, Patricia, I SO understand the feeling. When my chinchilla, Gretchen, Queen of the Moon Mice, died it was about a year before I started thinking about another pet. She was my first pet on my own, and my first pet with my hubby, so she did have a very special place in my life. I loved having a chinnie, but I wasn't sure I could have another. I was worried that I would compare it to Gretchen, which wouldn't be fair. My hubby suggested a small dog, since the only negative with a chinnie is that you can't really take them places like a dog. I was intrigued, but then I started feeling guilty. If I got a dog, would Gretchen be upset and take it as a sign that being a chinnie wasn't good enough. But then I realized that whether I got a chinnie or a pup, it would be a different pet, but it would still be a creature I loved. I figured Gretchen would be proud of me for giving another animal a good home, especially if I got it as a rescue. It took about 6 months, but we found Katie Dog, the Wonder Pup. She's become the princess of our home. Every once and a while, I catch her looking into the room that used to hold Gretchen's hutch, with her head cocked to the side like she's listening. Maybe she's getting advice on being a benevolent ruler from the Queen of the Moon Mice!

Hi Pat,

I have to agree with Lin, I think when its the right time, you will not question yourself or feel guilt. Just the fact that you're going back and forth tells me your not ready yet.

I know for myself i cant even watch the adds on TV for the SPCA and if the one add comes on that plays "You were always on my mind" forget about it,I am done, the tears start flowing.

I know in my heart I will never get another pet,and considering I have had dogs in my life since i was about 6 ,thats saying alot, but I know in my heart I could NEVER go through this again,I also know if i did have another pet,the fact that I would have to feel what I feel in my heart some day again

I had similar concerns about visiting a shelter. I eventually adopted from a foster based rescue group. **When you are ready**, that might be an option to consider. You can look at the group's website, or many rescues are on Petfinder, and if you see one that interests you, you can meet just that dog. If for whatever reason, he's just not the right one, you know he still has a good temporary home until his destined forever family finds him. Also, lots of dogs in rescues are given to the group by shelters that don't have the time or resources to help dogs with certain issues, like heartworms or skin infections, that can be treated, but need time to recover.

Just an idea to keep in mind for the future.
