Coconut Oil

I posted in several places about Jabaar's yeasty skin condition, and more than one person recommended I supplement his diet with coconut oil.  I've been doing that, although I am watching for possible weight gain.  Jabaar is a big boy, already, at 22.5 pounds.

Posting the information here, in case it might help another poochie.  Inexpensive.  Readily available.  Can be used in cooking.

That's great advice Gaye.  Have you noticed any change in Jabaar's skin?

I give Cleo a fish oil tablet every morning.  For a while she was scratching all the time, and now that has stopped....so I "think" it is the fish oil supplement in her food.

Jabaar was a stray in a kill shelter in September.  He had an ear infection, an eye infection, and several large skin tumors on his back.  I took him as a foster on October 2, to see him through surgery to remove the skin tumors.  That was done on 10/5.  Ten days later, I took him back to have his stitches removed, and the vet tech commented how hard it was to do, because Jabaar's skin was so bad.

And as you all know, Jabaar and I "connected" and I adopted him.

Just four months later, Jabaar's fur has grown back, although you can still see two scars, and his coat is thick and shiny.  Medications, medicated shampoo, frequent baths, good diet, fish oil capsule in the morning, coconut oil in the evening, and lots and lots of love.   He is such a handsome old fellow!

Ahhhh.  Wonderful, decadent coconut oil!  Have you ever had popcorn popped in coconut oil?  Though I wonder where you are getting "inexpensive" oil, I have no doubt that it has curative properties.  Just a thought though, have you tried feeding fish based, grain-free food?

Oh say, can you see?

So sweet!  I am glad Jabaar is doing well.  I gave Lucy fish oil when I got her, treating for kennel cough and heartworms.  She was shedding like a monster, and it helped her coat.  I should try some cocnut oil for myself!

As far as doggie food supplements go, the coconut oil is inexpensive. Jabaar gets a teaspoonful a day. And yes, we feed Blue Buffalo salmon and potato formula here. Anya has a grain allergy, and if I have to buy it for her, I might as well feed it to Jabaar also.
