Kidney Failure update
Thu, 08-29-2013 - 10:54pm

I took Comet in to see Dr. Jim today.  Comet has lost another 2 pounds, down to 75.  His body shape is changing and his hips, ribs and backbone are evident, but not too prominent.  He is losing protein and muscle mass.  Jim and I agreed that Comet is not ready to leave, but when he stops wanting to play fetch (now 10 times a day!), doesn't eat his 4 cups a day and becomes lethargic, it will be time to let him go.  For now, his life is as good as can be expected.

Oh say, can you see?

{{{Barbara}}}...I feel like it was only yesterday when I was in your shoes.  I fought so hard when I lost my ^Valentine^ because she was only 8YO....but Samantha also had the age problem against her.  But, even so, that July our regular vet thought we should let her go, while another vet gave us hope.  DH and I "felt" it just wan't her time....yet.  She got through her 16th BD and then, in October, we finally knew it was time.  For weeks we had been feeding her almost exclusively by hand...but she still got excited to go to the Dog Park, even though she just sat around.  But the night when she wouldn't eat, not even dog cookies, I said "we have to make a decision"...and we did.  It was her time.

If Comet is still playing and eating you're so lucky.  I imagine he's on special food....I had found some recipes for dogs in kidney failure.  Samantha didn't really like it so I ended up throwing it away.  But, at that point, I just wanted her to eat "anything".

Your Comet is in my thoughts and prayers....
