Happy Hump Day everyone!  I hope your week is going well so far!  Weather here is getting crazy warm - ugh!  They are saying we're going to have a hotter than normal summer which is about as depressing as it can be since our summers are always hotter than normal!  Hitting the mid 90's in mid-March is depressing!!

Dante is an interesting character.  He likes to eat but not to the extent that Emmy or Buzz did.  He also refuses to be put on a schedule which is a bit frustrating but since he's an only dog, I don't worry about it right now.  I have noticed that he likes to eat at 3am though - not good - LOL!  He is always waking me up crunching on his food so the other day I picked up his bowl so I could sleep.  Well that didn't work because then I heard his stomach growling and gurgling so loud it woke me up!  LOL!

Question of the Week:  Do you feed you dogs on a regular schedule or do they set their own schedule?

LOL! Sorry, I had to a laugh at Dante's stomach growls and gurgling!!

I have always fed Jack and Taz only in the morning. When they were puppies we fed them twice a day but now it's just once a day. I don't feed them - my dh does since he gets up real early. If he's out of town--like tonight-- tomorrow morning I will let them out to do their business and then feed them. They get treats throughout the day and never wake up hungry, although they are in the basement so if they are hungry they have to wait until we get up LOL

My greyhounds put me on a rigid schedule of feeding, and Comet has continued it pretty much on the same time frame.  I'm weaning him away from the 6:00am slot though.  I want to sleep in when I retire!

Greyhounds eat a ton of food, and because of the potential for bloat, I always fed the meals in two stages, so it worked out to four times a day. 6:00am, 6:30am, and again at 5:00pm and 5:30pm.  Now I still feed morning and night but don't split the meal anymore.

Oh say, can you see?

I've always fed my dogs on a semi-regular schedule.  Right now Cleo eats as soon as I get up - depending on the day that can be 5:00, 5:30, 6:00....but never later than 7:00 which is when we get up on Sundays.  Then she eats when one of us gets home....or if we're home early for whatever reason, we feed her about 6 p.m.  Saturday evenings we feed her when we get home from Mass, which is about 7 p.m.....and if for some reason we're going out somewhere after Mass we feed her before we leave.

Sometimes on Sundays she'll look for her food early....but I don't feed her until at least 6, or she'll be looking for something when we eat....

Poor Dante....his internal clock is certainly a bit off....LOL....

It sounds like Jack & Taz have a routine which is important!  They know when feeding time is!  For me, it was easier having 2 or more dogs because then everything was scheduled!  Now it's kind of a free for all with Dante - LOL!

You sound so diligent Barbara with the Greyhound feeding schedule! I think twice a day is a good way of feeding at least for Greyhounds and it sounds like Comet has adjusted just fine! It makes it so easy for you too! You have a set time to feed!

Your feeding schedule sounds perfect Laura! I was just like that when I had 2-3 dogs at a time! Just makes it so much easier and it sounds like Cleo works just fine with your schedule! Yeah Dante is "weird" Today he ate at around 5:30pm - I don't know what triggers him!

We have a schedule here.  With fosters coming and going, and as many animals as I sometimes have here, I need structure!

Pugs do best when fed small meals twice a day.  They usually wake at dawn, and with Daylight Savings Time that is around 7:30 right now.  They run out for a quick potty break, and while the dogs are outside, I take a bowl of food to the cat and shut him in his room.  Then I feed all three dogs.  About 10 minutes later, I let the dogs out again.  (I'm trying to housebreak Gemini.)

They get supper sometime around 5:30 PM.  I feed the cat twice a day, too.  He gets dry kibble in the morning and just a quarter of a flat can of wet cat food in the evening.

One cannot free feed pugs.  They would eat until they exploded.

hmmm that is curious about Dante.  I hope you can break him of the 3am eating time... my goodness.   Do you free feed him, (you didn't say)?  Does he drink enough water? (to fill him up between meals....  this is very curious......  )  WOW!  Too cute about his tummy growling...

Miss Coffee gets 2 small  but sufficient meals a day (for her age and weight, she has to stay at 12 Kilos/24 lbs). She likes kibbles both meals 7:30 am & between 5 & 7 pm)   with a tad bit of warm water on them.    Cockers are food driven and would eat all the time if allowed and like Gaye's pugs most probably until they explode.  About 2 weeks ago,  I had put some dried bread crumbs out back for the birds but had picked up all the rests and then buried some teeny crumbs under the rocks last Saturday after I  heard that C would be here today.  She wasn't out 2 minutes when I see her digging up the rocks and licking the bread crumbs.   That's the main reason I haven't been feeding the birds at all in the past couple years: go figure.

Hi Gaye - I never owned a dog that I could free feed which included Spencer & Emmy. I guess I do free feed Dante but I never give him more than 4 cups a day so I can keep track of how much he's eating!

Hi Suzan - I guess I free feed in the sense that I don't fill Dante's bowl at a certain time to feed him. He gets between 3 to 4 cups of kibble a day. I always monitor how much he's eating so I will know if something is wrong with his eating habits. He just isn't that motivated by food - kind of like Buzz. He definitely ate on schedule when I had Emmy because Emmy would have eaten his food but I don't think Dante cares now that he doesn't have to worry about his food getting eaten! On another note, I used to feed the birds in my old house but stopped because Emmy was stalking and killing them! It seemed mean of me to feed them just to set them up to get killed!
