QOTW: The Economy and Your Dog

How has the struggling economy affected you and your dog? Do you have pet insurance?

I can honestly say the economy hasn't affected us at all. But then Jack and Taz don't eat a lot. What gets expensive for me is when we board them. Boarding costs can get astronomical. When we go on vacation it will probably cost me $400-600! But if that means they're comfortable and having fun AND I feel comfortable leaving them then that's ok. Vet bills aren't an issue for me. I don't have pet insurance.

How about you?

NO, it hasn't affected ds yet. I try to help them out by paying all of Coffee's vet bills and most of her food. Food is expensive though for those who have large eaters, Coffee is not a huge eater though. My ds pays for her grooming charges, she gets a haircut every 3 months which comes to about $100. We have not boarded her, we plan vacations and business trips so that either they are with her or we are. We don 't have pet insurance but if we were to ever board her , it's mandatory. The vet said that since she's a young and healthy dog, the cost of the insurance would be way more than the yearly trips to the vet, even after her eye (both eyes) OP. I will consider it though when she starts to get older.

Well....with two struggling businesses we certainly have been affected.  It hasn't affected Cleo....but it has affected the fact that we cannot get another dog right now.  We just couldn't afford the extra cost.  I would never skimp on anything for my dogs, so I have to be practical.  Adding another mouth to feed, along with vet bills, is not something we can comfortably afford.  Hopefully if things start to get a bit better we will take in another furkid...I'm hoping for the Spring.

You're lucky you can plan vacations around Coffee and not have to board her. I'm not that lucky. I just don't trust a neighbor or friend to watch my dogs. They're too needy LOL

If you can get another dog - what would you get?

I'm really not sure...I've thought about another yellow lab or dalmatian.  Or just check at one of the local humane societies and see which one steals my heart, as Cleo did.  Definitely from a shelter or rescue though....there are so many to choose from around here....
