QOTW - Tethering

Happy Hump Day everyone!  I hope your week is going well so far!  Yesterday and today it's going to be in the 70's and then back to the 90's we go.  Ugh.....

So when I was growing up, no one thought anything about tying dogs outside to run around.  I think we had a long chain for our wire hair fox terrier so she could be outside but she was a runner so we couldn't just let her off leash.  These days, tethering like this, we know can be dangerous where the dog can choke themselves.  They have different setups now though like the tethers that run along what looks like  a clothes line so it doesn't tangle around their neck.  I was in the hardware store yesterday and I was amazed how many tethers there were for dogs in there!  I honestly didn't think people did that any more.

Question of the Week:  What do you think about tethering?  Have you done it or would you do it?  How about tethering in front of a store while you run inside real quick?

From the first time we had a dog, we always had a back yard, so we never tethered our dogs.  I'm a worrier....I would never put a leash or chain on one of my dogs and just leave them; even in my own backyard.  As for tethering my dog outside a store...never....anything can happen.  I've read too many stories where dogs have been stolen from in front of stores.  The dog can be teased, they may act aggressively towards someone outside, etc.

That being said, I'm sure that there are thousands of people every day that tether their dogs without an incident....this is just my own opinion.  I'm the type that worried even when my dogs were in my own back yard....I would have to check every so often to make sure they were OK....LOL....

I've never tethered any of my dogs. Not even before we got our fence when we got Jack. I was always out there with him anyway. I'm like Laura - I worry and I'm constanting looking out the kitchen window to make sure the dogs are ok. Oh, and I would never tether a dog outside a store. That's asking for trouble...in my opinion. Not safe at all!!

I've never done it, and I think it is actually illegal to tie your dog up in the back yard in this city.  (I should know; I'm a shelter volunteer.  But it doesn't apply to me, so I don't listen.)

Many years ago, my ex boss lost her German Shepherd that way.  He was tethered to something, tried to jump the fence, and hanged himself.  She came home from work and found him.  Awful.

I'm with you Laura - I would be checking on the dogs constantly if I tethered them outside so what would be the point?  LOL!

Hi Gaye - I have heard horror stories like that where the dog has hanged himself. But I have also heard the same thing about collars. So who knows. I suppose though, tethering is just asking for trouble!

I have Peco and Vozzy on runs but they are for just putting them out to do there business.  They both don't stay outside very long, they want in ASAP after they are finished.  Both of them follow me everywhere so when I go outside they come with me off leash and Vozzy (runs) and Peco (sniffys) around the yard.
