I thought I was a stellar pet mommy.  I'm guilty as charged.  How about you?

I pretty much follow the Do's on the list.

I stick all the pet bowls in the dishwasher about twice a week.

The shelter uses each bowl only once, washes them all, and they have a commercial dishwasher that sterilizes them.  One volunteer comes in every morning and does nothing but dishes.  Even when we do offsite adoptions like PetSmart, every dog gets its' own water bowl.

In all of my lifetime with dogs, we were never that fastidious.  I've learned a few things....

We have a laqrge plastic container that we empty the dog food into....and then we transfer a smaller amount to another plastic container in the pantry.  Both areas are in the house so they don't suffer from extremes of temperature.  But....I've never really thought to clean them out.  Now Cleo's food is almost finished....and I'll be sure to do that.  I'll also tell DH to keep the kibble in the bag instead of dumping into the container.

You learn something new every day....

My container is airtight but yes I'm guilty of not cleaning it. I'll start doing that. And to follow Suzan - I wash all doggie bowls at least once a week. They get yucky, especially the water bowls.

Gaye, what you do is not really bad,, at least the container is metal, and that was OK. Just wash it when it's empty adn you're set to go! ;O) I was thinking that one thing that many people forget to do is wash their pets food bowl. These articles really get one to thinking.... LOL

Hi Gaye, thank you that was VERY helpful information. I'm not "stellar" either. I will change to a metal kibble container.. I do store treats in a metal cannister. One thing that we do is buy Coffee's kibble in smaller bags, yes it's more expensive that way but for her safer. She doesn't eat much so an 8 lb bag lasts 3 months. I never ever buy treats or food from an open bin. another thing I just don't allow her to do, is eat from an open public bowl of food or water(which they have at the pet stores .) Yuck.

I used to have four containers, because each of my four pets ate a different thing.  All were poured out of the bag into a sealed container.  The big dog food container is a recycled popcorn can, and I have never washed it.  The containers kept the food safe from greedy pets and vermin.  I thought I was doing the right thing.

Guilty.  I always transfer the food from the big bag to a smaller plastic snap-top container.  And I can't remember the last time I washed it...
