I just noticed on the main board page that there is a new channel... iVillage en espanol.  Am I just seeing this or is it new?

Hello Tech CM Erin,

I can only deduct from your comments that none of the real ongoing issues,   which would enable cl's & board members to function, not to mention all input that has been reported since October, are actually not being worked on?     I get the feeling that most of the energy /manpower that should be being utilized into getting the site up and running efficiently is being pushed aside while other more "important things" aka new channels is the focus of iVillage.  While it is not a bad idea to include that particular channel or any new channel, why is it that iVillage would choose to launch it NOW , when the entire site isn't running properly or anywhere near user friendly? What will new members who want to join in think, how will they navigate around all the  problems we have here at this time?  Fix existing problems , then launch new channel but that's water under the bridge now.

I suppose this next point could be debated and I'm sure MUCH time was utilized in the design .....  but here goes:    The new "iVillage en Espanol" channel:  nice idea and clever that it is included.  I might even join in myself at some time,  but am just wondering why the name of the channel is "ivillage in spanish"  when the introduction is more "Spanglish" than Spanish? Actually it's in English with a few Spanish words thrown in for effect or it just looks like that on my monitor?  ;O)

Have a nice day.

Hi, Shy.

Actually we are purging. Right?

Adding the new channel doesn't slow down the system nearly as much as more than a decade of data that no one accesses.

Sorry that the wait is frustrating, but they have to finish testing the scripts in QA before they run them on the live site. After that, we'll get back to scheduling fixes. On that note, there's no conspiracy here. I and the Moderators are in the same boat as you -- we're being told to wait for what we want, just like everyone else. I'm just trying to stay out of their way / help them as much as I can, so they can wrap this up and we can move on.

Thanks!

...keep going!

Hi, Donna.

I want to clear up a misconception about what it takes to start new content on the boards. It doesn't take any tech resources to open another channel. It's a process built into the tools that we admins have available to us. Just as I've started new boards since the migration (ex: new expecting clubs, boards for community challenges), I'm able to start a new channel. It doesn't involve a minute of their time.

...keep going!

Hi Donna,

No problem. :)

I don't have any numbers on how many of who/what there is and what they are in charge of handling, etc. I do know there are different divisions, and it would be editorial that creates content, not tech.

I'll definitely keep sharing when I can and I'll pass along your feelings about the new espanol section and tech as well.

Thanks,

Erin

WHY are you adding new clothes to the closet before the old ones are purged? Nothing makes sense anymore. I've been here a long time, and I have to say that there was a time when I didn't feel like things were so secretive and ridiculously run. I never felt lied to, or deceived, or diminished. About the time the L&S channel started getting messed with, all of the deception started. I'm guessing whoever started that fiasco is responsible for this mess as well.

Hi,

I'm sorry it doesn't help. I've passed along your comments.

Erin...Thank you very much for your reply! It helps us to not be ignored.

So, everything is tied up while the deletion of data script is being run. That has to mean they're not running it on a separate server. Are they near bankruptcy again like they were in 2000 - 2001?? Do they not have money for another server or for a larger server? While the data is being deleted, do they not have any techs working on anything else at all? Except for starting up a new channel that is!! Grrr!!

It's frustrating to us hearing that they were able to add another channel while nothing is being done to fix board problems. When things are explained to us, even though we can't do anything about it, it at least allows us to feel that they care about what is important to us long time loyal members.

Thank you again for trying to keep us informed as much as they'll allow you to inform us with what little information you are given. Anything new you hear coming down the pike, please pass it along to all of us no matter how small it may seem for we would like to know what is happening.

Hi Donna,

I'm honestly not sure how they are running it. But I do know that they said they cannot change anything while the script is running, so no fixes will be done until the data deletion has been completed. However, I have inquired about what this entails exactly.

I know the login issue is in part to the slowness. Because it's two systems, it's not keeping up with each other due to one area lagging. We've always had an issue with the cookies not keeping for some members though, so I think that's just part of the original system (I know I've had people mention it from way back when I first started!).

I'm not sure what the signature issue is, if it's that it wasn't migrated or if that is what was migrated over, but I have a feeling that's part of the can't fix until the data deletion is done.

I'd be happy to help anyone one-on-one if they like. You (or anyone) can reach me at techtalk@mail.ivillage.com. :) Whatever I can do I'll try.

Thanks,

Erin

Erin...Is the deletion of data script being run on a separate server? If not, it should be. That would leave another server freed up to allow fixes to the boards to be done. The dragging of the system is only one of the things that needs to be fixed. Now today I did not have to log in again and that was a nice surprise. This has happened before, though, and then the next time I come back to IV, I'm having to log in multiple times again. Most of the time after logging in the first time, I can refresh the page and I am indeed logged in. This trick doesn't work for everyone though. Could they at least fix that problem? That's a cookie issue, shouldn't be hard or time consuming to fix. Then there's the siggy problem. Mine is working okay and I never change it anymore, so it's still the same. That's not the case for a lot of people, though, as they're only seeing old siggys from last year. It's important to them. If they would fix things like this, it would give hope that they care about our boards.

Hi Shy —

We will never not create new content as needed (such as expecting clubs or good suggestions by members). The rub is that we have 15 years of data, with an obscene amount (90%) of it being ignored. The system drags because it has to go through all that data. If no one is using the data, it makes sense to lighten the load so that the data that is being used can be done so quickly and efficiently.

HTH!
