Hi, everyone!

December was an interesting month around iVillage -- change of leadership, re-focusing of goals, re-prioritizing projects. The most important thing we have to do with message boards right now is improve their performance (and by that, I'm talking about the slow page load times, and the way we're found in Google) relative to all of ivillage.com.

As you know, the amount of data we imported from Lithium was staggering. This huge database is slowing everything down -- not just the boards, but the whole site, at times. So the call has been made to lighten the load. We'll be removing older and inactive THREADS from the boards, starting (probably) next week.

Here's the list of what we're KEEPING:
·         All threads created since the move to Drupal last October
·         All of the Food channel (we already did a big purge there last year)
·         Any thread with a reply on or after 1-1-2011 (So if a thread was created in 2003, if it had a reply in 2011, it stays.)
·         About 1000 other threads that don't fall into any of the above 3 categories, but we've identified them as having value in Google (most are in Love and Sex)

Again, this only impacts threads.

Right now, the team is doing a test run on the data in QA. If that goes smoothly, we'll get to work on the live site. I'll post an update here when that starts. It will take about 2-3 weeks, moving threads in batches, to get through them all. Our long-term plan is to have old threads available in a read-only archive, but that's a huge project in and of itself, and unfortunately I don't even have a time estimate for that.

After this database project is finished, I can get back to requesting fixes to the features of the boards. ;)

Stay tuned!

...keep going!

AAARGH! All that work I've put into links for tutorials in various topics will go AWAY? PHOOEY! Months of what I had been posting to before the mive to "Drupal, isit?) never did reappear and now older threads that I can't even find because search is broken will go? This may reduce your data load but it won't help my board any... I saw what happened when teh food boards were "purged" --- adn teh pet boards, and... So I suppose now my boards will become a folder on some "generic "hobbies" board where there wan't be anything at all of use to the few who can still access it.

This may be the final blowfor both my boards, I think. And for me as a CL...

Hi, Carol. Well, first...do you think any of those threads have a Reply in them on or after 1-1-2011? If so, they won't be removed.

Hi Jessica -

Thanks so much for the update.  :)

I have two questions - First, will removing the old/inactive threads do anything as far as improving the threads that have text missing from them?  I know of a bunch of older threads that have newer activity on them (and so won't be on the removal list, I assume?) but they have a lot of the original text missing from them.  Will freeing up some room help with that issue or is that something totally different that has nothing to do with space issues?

And second, I just want to be clear in my own mind on this one - since there is a long-term plan to archive all of the older threads, does that mean that the "remove" won't equate to "gone forever, either start bumping things up or kiss them goodbye!" but will be a "gone for now from the boards, but stored somewhere for later" thing?

:)

Thanks much,

Kim

Hi, Kim.

My pleasure -- I wish I had more updates for y'all. They're few and far between, I know. It's just that this issue is the only thing they've been paying attention to (rightly so, since it's a problem that now affects all of iVillage) and I either have their story or I don't. Anyway, to your questions. :)

Unfortunately, the problem of text being missing in a single post is a separate issue and has nothing to do with us not having enough space. The tech team will just have to figure out what's going on there.

And you're correct. The data isn't deleted / gone forever. Just think of it as "in storage" until we work out the Archiving solution.

It took THREE months to decide to solve a space problem by deleting data? When you asked Lithium how much data they had for you to convert, did they lie to you? Tell you they didn't know? Or Did no one think to ask? But good news that there have been leadership changes. Would the new leader like to come here, logon (if they can get in) and explain the technical plans? Not apologize - the I'm sorry window is closed - but lay out the one, three, six month plans for restoring confidence in the competency of Ivillage?

Hi Carol,

That's what I thought at first too. In your case though, because you keep running threads of your topics by replying to them, they won't be removed, unless there's some that you haven't updated in the last 2 years.

Jess...Thank you for finally giving us an update. I know you have to wait for information too.

Can you tell us please how many people are on the IV tech team? I'm thinking there must not be very many, like maybe two or three, for all of this to be taking so long and it sounds like it's going to take yet another long time to solve the problems. Just wondering.

Thank you.

some do but not all --- especially the ones that are missing (betweem April and October 2012, for examp[le --- there may well be others that I haven't been able to so easily identify as MIA)) and I can't find... You see, these aren't threads requiring replies. These are threads which are basically cataloging tips. tricks and projects for the stitchery categories on my board (seiwng, quilting, embroidery and yarn). Given the issues with editing them (cl names changing, etc. over the past 4 years), I can't move them all together so I can only occasionally refer to them as they reappear on my radar. So if someone wanted to make a stuffed Easter bunny adn there is a pattern for it posted back in 2010, it's gone... right? I don't have the time to try to find adn consolidate all these patterns so, like what happened with the purge on food, when recipes disappeared forever, that is what will happen to my four folders... and all that work I (and my two prec=decessors) have done will be lost...
