Hi, everyone.

I know I haven't posted an update in quite some time. Unfortunately, there's not much to report. Here's why:

When the boards started experiencing slowness -- pages taking forever to load, pages timing out and failing, etc. -- that became the top priority for the tech team. Shortly after they started investigating, it was brought to our attention that the slowness on the boards was slowing down the rest of the site as well. What started out as a message boards fix turned into a site-wide fix, with many more moving parts to take into account.

They're still working on these issues, including the login & posting failures. (The two issues are related, turns out.)

One small fix did go through though -- they raised the character limit for signatures from 255 to 1000. I bet many of you have seen signatures showing up again?

I'm getting an update from the tech team about the login/posting bug this morning, and I'm meeting with the higher-ups (all of them) at iVillage on Wednesday. We need a final solution to all of the issues we're having -- everyone here agrees on this. We can't keep going the way we are, and we know it. Should be an interesting meeting!

Thanks!

Jess

...keep going!

The #1 issue that my boardies are having a problem with is losing your place in a thread. When you click on it, it brings you to the first post rather than the first unread post. Is this a difficult fix? It would make everyone very happy in my world. Also the fact that when you respond, it dumps you at the end rather than putting you back where you were. Our chat threads get 500-900 responses in any given month and people are super-frustrated with always losing their place. I guess we could split them up by week but the problem would still be there, albeit on a smaller scale. My "looking forward to spring" siggy is annoying but I can live with it until some of the other issues are fixed.

Michelle, just wanted to share a temporary solution that makes it easier to keep your place.  When you and your boardies reply, right click the reply button and select "open in another tab".  The message you're replying to will open in another tab, you type your reply, hit post, and then go back to the original tab...or page...where you still have the whole thread visible.  It's not really any harder than replying on the same page, with the added benefit of not getting lost in the thread!

Thanks for the update, and I have to agree with the poster who said to get people who specialize in this. I hate having to log in every time I want to post. I can't use my sig line because it is all in HTML and haven't figured out how to get it to work yet. I have jpegs that I have added to, to use for my sig for now. I know it's a slow time, but so many people have posted they can't get logged in unless they do it 3 or 4 times. I hope something good comes from the meeting .... I miss my color fonts.

Thanks Sue - I think most people do quick reply. I have several people that keep open multiple tabs. I still get complaints though!

Have to say what is scaring me about all these problems is that about the only posts I am seeing are from commuty leaders and admins!   I fear way too many people who are not in those categories have given up.  Probably the only reason I am still around is I get stubborn about things and tend to keep trying until long after others have given up.I also am NOT a techie or a CL here but have been admining too many groups in FB. Also used to work in a job that was computer driven and have seen how hard it is to program fixes when there are computer issues. I can understand that you want to do things in house, but beginning to wonder if  you don't really need to bring someone in who  understands the problems AND how to fix them.  I would hate to this this site go down!!

I still can't change my signature so that issue being "fixed" is pretty moot if you can't do anything with it.

Hmmm... no update?

Wonder how much of that meeting was discussion regarding the massive public relations problem they have created for themselves?

Guessing that whoever convinced the management that taking the boards in house was a good idea has surely lost their job by now....

Thanks for your patience on this -- I am sure Jess will be replying as soon as she's got something definitive to share.

What was the point of telling us about the big Wednesday meeting if there isn't an immediate update after the meeting? There are two sets of incompetences in play here - technical and communication. Maybe three...managerial....this is so sad...the developers will find new jobs...the site will fade away...the friendships made here moved to Facebook or lost...

Six hours later, and no update from Jess. I wouldn't call that soon.

Patience? What patience?????  I understand that Jessica is the tech person, but surely our "senior community managers" have more information than the nothing we are currently getting! Another poster made a comment about this being a failure on more than just the tech level, but the communication and management in general. Do they have NO one in the higher echelons that understand how pissed off even the very, very loyal (i.e. member since 1997) are?
