Hi, everyone.

I know I haven't posted an update in quite some time. Unfortunately, there's not much to report. Here's why:

When the boards started experiencing slowness -- pages taking forever to load, pages timing out and failing, etc. -- that became the top priority for the tech team. Shortly after they started investigating, it was brought to our attention that the slowness on the boards was slowing down the rest of the site as well. What started out as a message boards fix turned into a site-wide fix, with many more moving parts to take into account.

They're still working on these issues, including the login & posting failures. (The two issues are related, turns out.)

One small fix did go through though -- they raised the character limit for signatures from 255 to 1000. I bet many of you have seen signatures showing up again?

I'm getting an update from the tech team about the login/posting bug this morning, and I'm meeting with the higher-ups (all of them) at iVillage on Wednesday. We need a final solution to all of the issues we're having -- everyone here agrees on this. We can't keep going the way we are, and we know it. Should be an interesting meeting!

Thanks!

Jess

I for one don't have that problem, but I for the life of me cannot find the right page on getting up dates when members reply to my posts. I've tried to find it, but I just can't find. Where do I go to find that?

Jess, thank you for posting this update. Two more favors please: first, can you take your recent post and make it a new update thread with a date stamp of this week where it will be seen at the top as soon as members visit this board. And second, can you please create a new update thread at the start of each week even if there's nothing significant to share. That way, members who cannot read replies, or cannot see threads that are not in the top few of a board, or those who just don't have the patience anymore to hunt for an update will know that you are trying to keep them informed.

Thank you.

Hi, everyone.

I want to give you an update on the meeting I had with my bosses last Wednesday.

The first important thing that happened was that I and some others here in the office got to tell our new GM the whole history of our community -- historical traffic trends, the Mizinga > Lithium move and the lessons learned there, the relationship we had with Lithium & the reasons we left, and much more. It was good for him to hear, and to put our current situation into a richer context.

The second important thing that happened was that we had long discussions about all of the options for improving the community experience at iVillage. There were some fearless, soul-searching questions, like "Does anyone think we should close the boards?" (Everyone in the room answered NO) and "Does anyone think we should move -- again -- to another platform?" (After due diligence, the answer is NO).

So the plan is to fix what we have, and just. make. it. work.

Now, obviously, the holidays are next week and many people in the office are leaving in the next few days. One thing I'm working on this week, however, is to re-establish a list of priorities for the tech team, so that once the holidays are over we have a starting point.

This week, the tech team is still working on the database performance issues we've seen on the boards.

Thanks,

Jess

...keep going!

Cara, I'm sorry there's no update yet, but truly, I've told you all I can. I am not in the office and therefore wasn't at the meeting. Jess plans on posting, but it's possible she's awaiting more details. I don't want to speculate and mislead, so that's really all I can say. I'd prefer to err on the side of caution than give inaccurate information or promise anything.

My apologies that I don't have more for you ... I have sent this thread onwards though. (Jess is actually our Community Director; she's not 'tech' but she is working closely with them.)

Patience? What patience?????  I understand that Jessica is the tech person, but surely our "senior community managers" have more information than the nothing we are currently getting! Another poster made a comment about this being a failure on more than just the tech level, but the communication and management in general. Do they have NO one in the higher echelons that understand how pissed off even the very, very loyal (i.e. member since 1997) are?

Six hours later, and no update from Jess. I wouldn't call that soon.

What was the point of telling us about the big Wednesday meeting if there isn't an immediate update after the meeting? There are two sets of incompetences in play here - technical and communication. Maybe three...managerial....this is so sad...the developers will find new jobs...the site will fade away...the friendships made here moved to Facebook or lost...

Hmmm... no update?

Wonder how much of that meeting was discussion regarding the massive public relations problem they have created for themselves?

Guessing that whoever convinced the management that taking the boards in house was a good idea has surely lost their job by now....

I still can't change my signature so that issue being "fixed" is pretty moot if you can't do anything with it.
