Profanity Filter Went Crazy

I tried to send a message to the gynecology board about a problem I was having with nightmares & certain lotions and how it was taking a toll on me, both physically AND sexually. It MADE ME DELETE EVERY GYNECOLOGIC WORD it could think of. The board wouldn't be called gynecology if it weren't about women's bodies down there. It's like the filter wants us to believe that we're all still in preschool or something.

There's no making sense of that profanity filter. I've seen the F-bomb get through, but sometimes it won't let innocuous words through. It won't let me post the word "exhibition*st", which doesn't even necessarily have a sexual connotation. I think "they" know that there is a problem with it. I agree, its crazy that it won't let you post anatomical terms on a sexual health board.

Hi —

I'm sorry you had a problem with the filter. Can you email me the terms you were trying to use? My email is techtalk@mail.ivillage.com. There's an issue with the profanity list sitewide—not just on the boards—so I'm trying to get everything synced up.

Thanks!

All right I sent you a list of the words I used from my Yahoo account. I just got another error as well, apparently, I'm being told that I'm "not authorized to post comments", why would that be?

Hi,

I got your email and sent a reply. Those words don't seem to be blocked as they are in posts on the board, including your own. I'm wondering it there was something other than these terms that was the issue. I'll keep an eye out for them though. Please let me know if it happens again.

As for the not authorized, that happens when you're not logged in.

The site is slow with officially logging you in so if you're trying to navigate/post before you're actually logged in, you'll see that message. This is something our tech team is aware of and is currently working on correcting.

In the meantime, the best way to access the site would be to use the following link:

www.ivillage.com/user/sign-in?forward=http://www.ivillage.com/forums/ivillage-women/around-ivillage/ivillage-help

Once you hit submit, you'll be automatically brought to the board. Please refrain from navigating the site until the page has refreshed and you see your info listed under the quick links section on the right side of the page.

I hope this gets addressed soon so that I don't have to see the word dildo in the title of a post on After Your Affair.  The Boards are so slow, it'll be quite a while before that post goes down on over to the next page.

I flagged it as inappropriate, but apparently people think because people made a bad choice, they can be treated with disrespect.

Clarity, I saw that title and was also surprised that it made it past the filter. I so wanted to ask why a guy would have one in his sock drawer, but decided that wouldn't be very nice lol.

Hi Clarity,

That particular word is not related to the profanity filter's efficiency. It's an allowable word as it's not in violation of the TOS. I realize it may not be a comfortable word to some, however in it's present form, i.e. not a personal attack, it is allowable and the fact that it remains is not at all related to the choices any of our members make. Judgements are only passed when determining the observation of the terms of service of the post content.

I will send the mod of the board a note, so she knows your concerns.

Thanks,

Erin

okay.  It just bugs me because I've seen that particular poster before, and I think it's a troll who took it to another Board as well.  And it's just plain rude to title a post that way. As I mentioned before, in the old days when the Boards were hopping, a post didn't last very long at the top unless people responded...and no one would have to stare at it for too long.

It's not that I am a prude or anything...I DO HAVE a sock drawer :)

Erin, why won't the profanity filter let the word "exhibition*st"  get through?

I thought the exact same thing, ELc11...lol, and that's why, too, I figured the poster was just trolling boards.
