iVillage to Be Shuttered as Standalone Site, Folded into Today.com

By Chris Ariens on November 22, 2013 10:32 PM

Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 10.24.51 PMiVillage, one of the earliest websites for women, will be folded into Today.com next spring, TVNewser has learned. The news of the dissolution of the standalone site is the second such move today. As TVNewser reported earlier, NBCLatino.com will be folded into NBCNews.com, eliminating three positions.

The iVillage changes will results in the loss of up to 12 jobs.

“Combining these strong lifestyle brands under the ‘Today’ banner will give iVillage much bigger reach and will further integrate it with NBC News,” a spokesperson tells TVNewser. “We are actively trying to find roles for those affected elsewhere in the company.”

iVillage was founded in 1995 by Candice Carpenter, Nancy Evans, Robert Levitan, and Tina Sharkey as one of the first Silicon Alley startups and one of the first websites targeted to women. The company had a high-flying IPO in 1999, when shares reached $100, only to crash in the dot com bubble two years later.

NBC Universal acquired iVillage in 2006. In 2007-2008 NBC produced two successive but unsuccessful iVillage-themed TV shows for local stations. Last year, the site moved from the NBC Entertainment digital group to the NBC News digital group.

Under new NBC News president Deborah Turness there is more emphasis on integrating digital and broadcast assets. The iVillage and NBCLatino moves come as the head of NBC News digital Vivian Schiller departs NBC for Twitter.

So - are they dumping the message boards? Hope those twelve positions being lost are not the community moderator personnel.  With the lack of fanfare about this, I am suspicious......

Yes, I knew there had to be a reason behind the neglect...Everytime I've heard of the healthcare website disaster, I wondered if that's where the developers who did the board conversion went...

Guessing  those "up to 12 jobs lost" are all from the community support department  because they are dumping the message boards. Hopefully there will be someplace within the new company that can absorb them.

All those promises about not doing in the boards... right! This makes me wonder if the CMs knew or were kept in the dark like the mushrooms we all seem to be to NBC...

Have you seen the Today.com site? celebrity gossip, celebrity "news", horoscopes and the like. The board content simply has no place over there.

Hard to say.  I never really blamed the employees.

I would suspect this has been in the wind for a long time.  I'm just not sure I understand why anyone is all the surprised by it..... things have been neglected for a long time around here.  However, I will say it's pretty sad when those who had the will power to stick with iV thru thick-n-thin had to get that long wanted "update" of what's going on from some where else.

In the end, our loyalty meant nothing, sadly Cry  I'm sad to learn about it elsewhere, instead of here through direct communication.  Oh, wait, that stopped a long time ago.  Well, the past 15 years of my life and the boards that once existed were a chapter that I'm sad to close, but I'm glad for that chapter because I have made some irreplaceable friends, and it takes a LOT more than a closing community to separate us.

I wish my fellow CL's well.  Give yourselves a much-deserved pat on the back for the job you loved and did so well, and think of all the women to whom you mattered even if it was for just one troubling day in their lives.

Hi ladies,

This was sad news, we just found out as well.  We are still waiting to hear how the boards will be handled in the future, so stay tuned.  We will pass on any information as soon as we get an update, for now we are operating business as usual.

I hope you all have a good Thanksgiving.

If so many of us CLs saw the writing on the wall months ago, I find it hard to believe that you actually "just found out about it."

I joined iVillage nearly 14 years ago.  So many board members were like family to me.  We loved and supported each other trhough the good and bad times in our lives.  We fought to keep our communities together.  Most of us gave up and moved our communities elsewhere months ago, but this is a very real loss.

This is beyond sad. iVillage was my family for years. The neglect set in and... this is what's left. I'm glad I was a part of what used to be a really good thing. And I'm so happy to have kept my friends I made here. We found a way to survive as a group. Thanks for the memories, IV. You sure used to be great.

For what it's worth, I still can't log in. Only from my phone.
