Bloomberg Wants to Hide Cigarettes
Mon, 03-18-2013 - 3:34pm

After losing the fight to ban large sodas, NYC Mayor Bloomberg now wants to hide tobacco products from the view of children:

The proposed law would "prohibit display of tobacco products" in most retail shops, Bloomberg said. "Such displays suggest smoking is a normal activity and invite young people to experiment with tobacco."

"These laws would protect New Yorkers, especially young and impressionable New Yorkers," Bloomberg said at a Queens hospital, adding that a decline in youth smoking has stalled out with about 8 percent of young people lighting up.

Do you think that putting cigarettes out of view will keep kids from smoking?  Is this an unnecessary burdan on store owners to have to hide a legal product?

This won't deter kids from smoking at all. It will only confuse those who already smoke. Wonder if this will include e-cigarettes

A tyrant in totalitarian can give command directly without any explanation. He had his servent to carry out the command by force. That's dictatorship.

A tyrant in 'democracy" can give command with a reason. He has his followers to carry out the command with justification. That's "American style of liberty".

Would he ban pants and skirts next time because if you don't keep your leg warm, you may get arthritis that would increase health insurance fee.

Definitely overkill on hiding cigarettes. I think at some point people will simply have to be responsible for their own choices - even if that means looking at naughty cigarettes.

Bloomberg is a wackjob control freak.  It would be interesting to investigate his life and see the hypocrisy ooze out.  I'm sure he'll soon be looking to force store owners to hide the sodas and tasty cakes as well.  In fact, 711s will soon be "blacked out" like sex shops.  Complete loon.

What a total kook! I've been in countless stores throughout my life that have cigarette displays, and I'm not a smoker. It starts with educating your children, let children ask their parents what they are when they do see them in the store.  Give parents a chance for some good dialogue, you can't just hide all the bad stuff in the world for view. Children will come across it at some point in their life. I agree that it does put an unnecessary burden on store owners, the city should have to pony up the cash if they want this put into effect.
