Is he not familiar with the requirements of President of the United States? Is this bone head really making decisions for our country? Sigh. What next, the island of Guam tipping over again?

Sorry, I have a hard time keeping track of who and who cannot view video. I'll try to remember that from now on, but I can't make promises. So, now that you've gotten a better idea of what Durbin's comments included, do you still think he was talking about people other than those affected by the Dream Act?
There is no official transcript that I can find, and misspeaks like this were only newsworthy when Bush was speaking them so there is nothing in that medium either.
I can try to provide more detail if you need, but I'm guessing that won't be necessary.

Personally, until I can see a transcript (from as neutral a site as possible), I can't make any judgment. I have always read comments by Bush, O'Reilly...even Coulter, in context. I never go by just one or two sentences.

Bush was 'newsworthy' because he had such a skill when it came to mangling words...or even making them up! ;)

If so many people here can't even assess the video and there is no complete transcript available how can anyone be so sure that Durbin didn't say what I and the other poster have stated?

What irritates me most about this story: When Palin made her gaffe about Paul Revere it was in the papers, it was on the news, it was on the cables, it was discussed till it was beaten to death. Here Durbin makes a gaffe suggesting that the "Dreamers" or "Dream Act Students" could be "maybe even our President" and it goes unreported. Durbin is a high level Senator. He was a US Rep 1983-1997, he's been in the Senate since 1997. He is the Senate minority Whip (second highest position), he is a lawyer. And no one says boo.
People make mistakes all the time. In sensationalized debates such as the one regarding the Dream Act speakers tend to get a bit overzealous in making their point and often err. I can accept that. However, what I can't easily accept is the media's bias that leads them to report and report and report on something Sarah Palin, (an ex-gov., ex-VP, present pundit) says and not the minority whip when he states that a Dream Act Student, which are illegal residents- can become President.

Sorry, but you have not ruled out that there were people in the gathering who were born in the U.S. of illegal immigrant parents. And they WOULD be eligible to eventually become president of the United States, under the concept of jus soli.

Please see jabberwocka's response. Also, Ms. Palin is constantly making gaffes, which is why the media picks up on it. And, I seem to remember the media going after VP Biden for some of his gaffes....so it's not really just picking on Palin (although how she ended up in this conversation is beyond me... ;)

After reading your explanation of the video and remarks, I have to say it's certainly a good possibility that Durbin did indeed make his "president" remark towards the Dream Act kids.

And maybe Palin's gaffes are more often picked up by the media is because she's always "in" the media (of her own choice), and she has run for vice president, and I imagine everyone in the U.S. knows who she is. I can't offhand recall hearing of Durbin until this thread.

yes, I did. I listened to the video. You cannot say the same so you cannot make that determination.
He was addressing a senate committee hearing, he acknowledged the Dream students, he then immediately after asking them to sit after the acknowledgment made the comments.

Sometimes it's ok to put bias aside and see what is really there.

I saw her response and she is wrong.

Yes, it's more than a possibility, he did. I appreciate your willingness to look at this from more than one narrow point of view.

Durbin is a well known Senator, I he's the majority whip in the Senate, I'm really surprised you haven't heard his name. He was very critical of Bush and received a lot of media face time then.
He's from Illinois which is why I'm more familiar with him.

Interesting this notion that Palin has some how asked for this scrutiny. Maybe if the media reported on the senate majority whip not knowing that an illegal citizen, or legal citizen not born in the US cannot become President more people would be familiar with him as well. Consider that it is the media that catapults these individuals to the position of becoming a household name.
