Former US Vice-President Dick Cheney has had a heart transplant and is now recovering in hospital, his office has said.

It said the surgery had been carried out on Saturday at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia.

Mr Cheney, 71, has had heart problems for much of his adult life, suffering five heart attacks since the age of 37.

Mr Cheney served as former President George W Bush's deputy from 2001 to 2009.

"Although the former vice-president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," Mr Cheney's spokeswoman said in a statement.

She also revealed that Mr Cheney had been waiting for a transplant for more than 20 months.

The spokeswoman provided no further details.

He'll live longer than many others. People with wealth and connections can move up the organ transplant list. This has gone on for many years. Mr. Cheney is just the most recent, and notable in a long list of questionable recipients. Off the top of my head, come to mind the following: Larry Hagman, Micky Mantle, Steve Jobs, David Crosby.

Micky Mantle had cancer when he received his, Jobs also had other complicating conditions, but was able to bypass the normal process because he had cash. Same with Hagman and Crosby.

I won't donate an organ until the system is fixed. With a lawyer who specializes in transplants and a few hundred thousand dollars, it is possible to game the system and bump others from their organs.

What we won't know is the names of the recipients the rich and powerful denied organs to. Those too poor and not powerful enough to pull an organ to it's new home. :(

I can think of several wealthy drunks that were able to get liver transplants.... Mickey Mantle had two.

An older article but still relevant....

I don't like Cheney, at all... but maybe Presidents and Vice Presidents should move up the line a little faster.

BUT..... the article said he waited 20 months and had been having heart attacks for 34 years.

I dislike him alot, but I wouldn't deny him a new heart.

I thought you had to have a heart to have it transplanted. What a waste,to give a heart to a piece of scum like cheney.

My concern isn't the politics of an individual as that the transplant list and system in the U.S. is corrupt. As for Cheney not saying nice things about Obama, it's unfortunate. I wonder though, did you mind when Bill Clinton bashed President Bush? Clinton didn't remain silent after Bush took office. Personally, I'd prefer recently retired Presidents, Vice Presidents and leaders of the House or Senate to refrain from topical politics for a few years.
