Florida is joining California, Arizona, and Michigan in allowing their folk to use their food stamps at fast food restaurants.
Should we overhaul this system?
When we have an obese nation, seems we are not going to cut health care costs going this route.
Should food stamps only be redeemed for healthy choices? Should we just be giving out prepackaged healthy meals?
Might as well just give them a debit card to spend any way they choose?

The problem is the food stamps are too little to eat healthy and have enough to eat.

I think many of the people/families that face food insecurity aren't "poor" enough for assistance. All you have to do is make $1 a month too much and you don't qualify. It doesen't mean that "extra"

"What I find ironic about this whole debate is that here is this thread on people using food stamps should be forced to buy healthy options only, and then there's another thread about how wrong it is for Michelle Obama to promote good nutrition and excercise."

LOL! Yes, that's true. Funny how that works.

It is so interesting that the "Nanny state" is sp dispised until it comes to forcing others to do with their resources that some disagreewith.

No irony for me regarding forcing people on food stams to buy healthy food.

There are already limitations on what food stamps can be used for.

If the food stamp system needs to be fine tuned to assure appropriate food choices, I'm fine with that.

My concern would be the government telling anyone, including the poor, what they can do with their own cash in the way of food purchases.

I distinguish a limit on an entitlement from a limit on a liberty. If the government won't pay for something, no problem. If they won't let me pay for something, potentially a problem (depending on what it is). Limiting what foods I chose to purchase, isn't any concern of our government. Keeping food safe (as in non-toxic, edible, and non-cancerous), assuring food products report the correct weight so we know what we are buying is a valued function of our government.
