Michele Bachmann: Gay People Can Get Married -- But Only To Members Of The Opposite Sex

GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says gay people do have the right to get married -- so long as they're planning on tying the knot with a member of the opposite sex.

The Minnesota congresswoman was campaigning in Iowa Wednesday addressing a group of high school students when Jane Schmidt, president of Waverly High School's Gay-Straight Alliance, confronted her on same-sex marriage rights.

Bachmann had just finished explaining that the purpose of government was to ensure that the civil rights of all Americans are protected.

"We all have the same civil rights," Bachmann said, according to the Des Moines Register, providing an opportunity for Schmidt to press her.

"Then, why can't same-sex couples get married?" Schmidt asked.

"They can get married," Bachmann responded. "But they abide by the same law as everyone else. They can marry a man if they're a woman. Or they can marry a woman if they're a man."

One generally chooses to engage in sexual activitiy or not. One generally chooses their partner. And as far as "love" is concerned, statistically, arranged marriages are very successful.

Arranged marriages tend to be successful when the woman has little or no other options.

Many disagree.

How & who do same sex couple hurt??

I didn't suggest they were.

YOU brought up pedophilia...why then?

It's called 'denial'. Or they may be bisexual - IMHO, there are may more people who are bisexual than are apparent. It's all in whom you fall in love with. An individual can deny their homosexuality under the duress of public and/or family pressures. After all, who really wants to be discriminated against or shunned by their own families? To stand up & be true to who you are takes much more strength than that.

How long did it take for women to overcome prejudice & gain even the right to vote or start to be treated equally? How long did it take Black Americans to gain equal rights? For how long was interracial marriage banned in our country? Just because there are currently enough bigots in power (or being puppetmasters) doesn't mean that it is just or that it should be 'illegal'.

ITA. My nephew is one of the strongest, most well balanced people I've ever met, in spite of hearing about people like himself, denigrated by his father his entire early childhood. I mean, what kind of inner fortitude does it take to come out a

The only thing degrading religion are the religious nutjobs who think it is their duty to make everyone else live by their beliefs.

You mean like the liberal wackjobs who push their men-should-marry-men-I-should-be-able-to-kill-my-baby-I-hate-SUVs ideology on the rest of us?

Again with marrying inanimate objects.

I know cabbages aren't the life of the party, but vegetable lovers everywhere are offended.

It's so darn predictable and the arguments have already been made pointing out how ridiculous those examples are...another reason why Prop 8 supporters keep losing in the courts.

Well, first of all, the "cabbage" reference was obviously...to everyone else...a joke.

All it takes is one Supreme Court ruling.

Arranged marriages tend to be successful when the woman has little or no other options.

Why does the woman have no options?...and how would that make a marriage successful?

How & who do same sex couple hurt??

I suppose polygamists might as the same question...but there are a host of religious and social reasons easily accessible via the internet if you're sincerely interested.
