I like the self-checkouts most of the time. Especially when I am in a rush. Our grocery stores always have both open so if you prefer a cashier, you can wait in line and have one....or you can do it yourself quickly. I think the grocer is making a mistake and taking choice away from some people.

I had to go in Albertson's yesterday to pick my meds. I asked the clerk who was over seeing the self checkout & she told me that WA state isn't 1 of the state getting rid of them. So I'm happy about that

I go to QFC & I have never had any problems with their setup. They even have a shelf right beside the scanner where I can set my purse. What I really like is that they implemented a 'not bagging' option so you can put a large item right back into the cart.

The Albertson's in our area has had the self-checkout for some time. They have both the 15 items or less & the large self-check options. I'm not as fond of their setup. I've had it miscan, etc. during the times I've used them. Plus, they aren't always 'open' either. I rarely go there now that my DD is out of high school (the store is a couple of blocks from her old HS).

I'm going to be sad to lose them. My local store is super busy, we have 6 or 8 of the self service lanes. I'm a Taursa & hate waiting in line exspecially if I've only got like 3 or 5 items. I'm busy I want to get in, find what I want/need & get the heck out of there

Some stores have fast checkout lines, most don't. Unless the lines move quickly, a self checkout option is helpful. Overall, for small purchases, self checkout is easier for me. With large orders, where there is a bagger, regular checkout is fine.

Many stores are enhancing self checkout. Wal-Mart is moving toward a RFID system. The RFID system would replace bar codes, and could make checkout as easy as pulling your card by a RFID scanner. Everything would be scanned in the card, and you'd get your itemized bill.

Automation if implemented well, improves our lives.

I don't think it's going to break my heart to have them removed from my local Albertson's. It seems like they are too sensitive and glitchy. I have to make sure my kids don't touch anything in the bagging area or the machine stops. I have to make sure I don't put my purse down anywhere or the machine stops. I've had problems when trying to pay. It's just ridiculous how time consuming they can be when things go wrong with them.

It makes sense using these lanes for 15 items or less. The stores I go to use them for all types of orders.
Welcome to the board. :)

This is a surprise. My local Albertsons just put in self-checkout machines about 3 months ago. And now they might take them out?

We get the bag discount at all of the stores around here. At one of the stores, you have the choice of getting the credit back in change or giving it to a charity. They change the charity every month. I figure it's an easy way for me to donate too!
