Obama and Restaurants Changing their menus

This one kills me. I realize that as a country we are more obese and unhealthy but come on, if my kid wants to order fries at a restaurant, let him have fries. It's up to me, mom, to decide if he should be able to have them. I don't go out to a restaurant to get apple slices. I eat out for taste and a splurge, not just convenience. If they think this is going to help people, by taking away their choices and forcing them to eat healthier, I am going to be they are wrong. I'll stay home more, contribute less to the profits of restaurants and deep-fry my own unhealthy food. I wonder what's in it for the restaurants but I know I'll patronize them less. I'll miss you, Olive Garden! No point in going out for a family lunch if our choices are limited and we can't order what we want the few times we eat out.

Stay out of my food choices, Mr. President. I think you have bigger and better things to handle.
Ridiculous.

President Obama hasn't done anything to "make" restaurants change their menus. Weird how you think that our president is meddling in your food choices.

There was nothing in the link which indicated that fries couldn't be ordered if they were on the menu.

Restaurants have begun to offer some healthier choices. YOU can still choose whether to avail yourself of them or not.

And it was not the president who endorsed Darden's changes, but First Lady, Michelle Obama.

This is just more ho-hum political preening and pandering. The consumers will show their opinions by where they choose to spend their money. Like you, I eat out to enjoy richer fare than our typical lowfat home daily maintenance meals. So, duh, yeah, it's a treat and I will go where the treats I want are available that I can enjoy for a special occasion. :P Consumers are free to choose what restaurants they patronize. If people aren't happy with changes in the fare served, they'll just go elsewhere. Media and political posturing notwithstanding. Shrug. :| And yes, if we can't get our treats out, then we'll damn well cook them at home, LOL! :D

I am all for educating people. I am not for bludgeoning businesses with bad press or embarrassing press or pressuring them. People should be able to choose and their money and their patronage will determine what a restaurant serves. If people come in and request different options, or email and request more menu options that are low fat, or what have you, *that* is great. It's coming from individuals. Not some big wig or fanatic getting media attention. Change will not come until more individuals make healthier choices for their regular day to day meals. And if they need to eat out a lot of days of the week, then voice their needs to their favorite places to eat. Change comes slow with people growing in understanding and knowledge. I really object to preachy health nut types browbeating everyone in arrogant fashion and treating everyone as though they're too stupid to learn. Putting people on the defensive and pointing fingers will change nothing. The war on drugs failed miserably. If we use similar strategies for the "war on obesity" we will also fail. JMO, of course. But we need to learn from past mistakes, not repeat them. ponder.gif

My SIL is a supervisor for McD's and she said that M Obama has gotten McD's to cut the fries out of the Happy Meals and they now come with Apple Slices. All of them, no longer slices as an option.

Michelle Obama has no power to "make" any company change their menu, nor does President Obama. Having worked for McDonald's myself, I find it hard to believe that a supervisor is privy to what the upper management thinks about anything.

I don't actually see anywhere that fries are banned and people are forced to get apple slices. Only more options for those of us that don't want to grease out. Apparently, you can still order crap, if that's what you need to have fun.

Really, peoples negative reactions to healthier choices being...... AVAILABLE..... speaks volumes about

Heh, heh.

It's not something they implemented as of......last night. Daughters friend showed up with a Happy Meal with......fries.

Yep. The only thing that changes is that apples are the default for the Happy Meal instead of the fries. All that means is that for people who usually get the apple slices, they won't have to specifically request them while those who want fries will have to. Big frickin' deal. I've been doing it for years in order to get apple slices instead of fries. I guess it's just way too hard for them to say "I'd like a four piece McNugget Happy Meal with fries."

I can't argue with anything you wrote. It makes perfect sense...and yes, the whole fauxrage is bizarre.
