NASHVILLE - The Senate approved, 19-11, a modified version of Sen. Stacey Campfield's bill to block teaching about homosexuality in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The modified version declares that "any instruction or materials made available or provided at or to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science." The previous version stated "no public elementary or middle school shall provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality."

Oh, yeah, let's restore bigotry in school curriculum...and invalidate gay students at the same time. So other students can persecute them as they continue to do every day. :|

Obvious homophobic crap. And for the record, I'm a Republican. Homosexuals exist. Bisexuals exist. Transgender people exist. And many of them have sex, form lasting relationships, interact wit hsociety, etc. Ignoring them in textbooks or subjects where sexuality or gender is relevant makes as much sense as picking several elements off the periodic table and baning them from chemistry class.

Ultimately, the crux of the matter is that the government shouldn't be in the business of endorsing, shaping,or otherwise messing with sexuality. People can do that all on their own. When it comes to education, we need to teach children how the world is, not how some subset of people believe it should be.

When I first heard about this, I remembered why my niece left teaching in Tenn. She was teaching 4th grade, and the kids were making Career Day presentations. One girl got up and told the class that her "career" was going to be having babies and going on welfare. My niece told her "Being on welfare is NOT a career," and told her she needed to choose a "career" and do another report. My niece was called into the principals office the next day and told "it was not her place to judge the children." My niece explained that she didn't "judge the children, but that she wanted them to know being on welfare was NOT a career. A "career" was something like nursing, teaching or being an engineer." She was written up for what she did. She told me "that was it. I was not going to stand there and lead an entire class to believe that WELFARE and having babies was a CAREER! I would be derelict as a teacher, to do so." She also pulled her kids out of public school and sent them to a private one instead.

So, am I suprised that a state that would support children in believing having babies and being on welfare is a CAREER, would also ban discussion of homosexuality? Not really. Isn't it more righteous to pump out babies and be on the dole, than to be gay?
