Education provides the basics to implement innovative ideas. e.g. someone not knowing physics and engineering wouldn't understand Nano technology or its uses. It is true that for some genius like Einstein formal education may not be necessary but even he needed grants and money to fund his research and was associated with university. For most of us cannot implement new techniques without education and understanding of basic concepts..
Just a General comment,
Our universities are very good, but they are also run by businesses. If a student wants to pursue something just for sake of knowledge he or she is not going to get the support from the department unless a company sponsors his research. It has its pros and cons. Pro is that money is spent only on things that are going to be applied to improve the economy and aid to the growth. Con being not able to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
I am not an expert by any means. Plus barely get time to visit this board.
We spend plenty on education.
"I think the first thing we need to fix is our teachers.
I too agree most of my teachers sucked. The reason they sucked is not as much lack of knowledge but communication skills.
I think the first thing we need to fix is our teachers. Most of them suck. Throughout the whole of my education, I can count the "good" teachers on one hand...and still have a few fingers left over. We should pull them off the pedestals some folks have put them on and make them accountable for meeting performance standards, like every other business.
Actually, that is very surprising to me. I am thinking perhaps some school districts may not have good teachers.
