I ran AVG on my desktop when I found that Norton was just so expencive...I never had a virus...

Then I got a laptop and it came with Norton....which had the full suite and I think it really slows down the computer so when it was time to pay for the subscription I uninstalled it and used AVG on that...I had no problems with it.

Another good free one is Avast......

My Newer desktop came with 3 years of free McAfee so that is what I am using now.. My new laptop also came with McAfee but it was 4 years free....

All I can say is I had used the free AV for several years and never got anything......I always made sure it was up to date..

I second the vote for Avast Free. Its excellent, very full featured. I have found that it uses less resources than AVG, less of a memory hog. Just the other day it upgraded me to the newest version. Its got a new feature built in for giving another person access to your desktop if you are having a problem, like a support person from a software company or a friend that knows about computers. Also conversley another person can grant you permission to their desktop, so you can help them out. This is all done through Avast apparently. I have not tried it yet, i just noticed the feature in the menu. I suppose it is similar to Windows Remote Assistance that comes with your Windows OS.
