IPad vs GPS (Suggestions? Help? Opinions?)?

I want to get an iPad and use it as a GPS. I was wondering:
1. How good is a GPS on an iPad?
2. Does a regular GPS have an advantage over an iPad GPS?
3. Do I need to get a version with a sim-card. In other words does iPad GPS use internet connection in order perform well/better or is it a stand alone GPS that doesn't require any internet connection?
4. What are your experiences with using an iPad as a GPS?

This is confusing to me since I don't have an iPad...but they talked about real GPS and assisted GPS....
I found a couple articles maybe you can tell if it is something that you were thinking about..
Ipads are awesome and the screen is huge. If your not on a data plan you could pay a fortune on a trip using the Internet for this function. Wifi is everywhere so you don't have to pay for the Internet. I would let now GPS do it's job. Two different things.
