It turns out that free downloadable antivirus programs are just about as good as expensive paid versions. Take a look at these recent PCWord articles:

My first 2 computers came with Norton which I liked and paid for...but then when I got my laptop it came with Norton Internet Security which I didn't like at all...so when it ran out I downloaded AVG(free) AV. Uninstalled Norton and the computer ran a lot faster.....I have never had a virus, I have been careful too but using AVG and Zone Alarm on my laptop kept me safe....

Also there are things you can do to check for malware and things that are on your computer to help it run better....

Well, "just about" but not exactly :) The main difference is the way paid software update virus signatures. That's probably the main problem nowadays. You can have the same virus detection engine but it won't block new threats if it doesn't have up to date definitions. Paid software = fast servers, quick update. Free software = second in the line :) Anyway, if you don't keep very important information on your computer, free antivirus is probably enough. Otherwise, i would go for paid Norton ESET. I use ESET. Kaspersky is another good one.
