Sign on a closed "Journey" store at a Rochester, MN mall this week:

Dear Jamie,
Since you decided to say "cancer is not an excuse" and think it's OK to swear at your employees like you do ALL the time ... WE QUIT. THIS is why you can't keep a store manager longer than a year. YOU ABUSE your roll AND staff. ENJOY the fact that you lost a store manager, co-manager, and key holder in the middle of Back to School. THINK next time you treat people the way you do. We Aren't Allowing It Anymore.

This story ran online today about three mall boutique employees who quit their jobs, and in the process "fired" their boss.

Popular opinion seems to be in favor of the employees with many expressing support for their public display of "defection" and lambasting a bad boss.

What have your experiences been with bosses or managers? What did you do about them? What policies or procedures were in place, or not, to aid employees with complaints? What happened to employees who complained?

I have worked at two different jobs where a group of employees have joined forces and gotten bosses fired. There seems to be a mentallity these days that making a public spectacle and complaining loud enough can get rid of anyone and from what I have observed in my limited job experience, it works. Unfortunately, at my present job where this happened to a supervisor 8 months ago, as soon as the boss was fired, everyone realized what a mistake it was to have grouped up against him. Now everyone is worried that everyone else will form a group against them since it worked. I never personally thought the guy was that bad but no one asked me. They only talked to the squeaky wheels. I am looking for another job because I don't want to be part of an organization where a group can get together and vote anyone they want off the Island.

This reminds me of the Fox network show Does Someone Have to Go? (http://www.startribune.com/208507421.html).

The letter probably would be more respected by me personally if they used correct grammar and spelling. We don't really know the background. I wonder how cancer fits into this--I can't imagine all three employees needed to be out of the store because of that reason exactly. It's more plausible that one of them has that diagnosis and is just being supported by the others, but of course, I don't know how much work that one with the diagnosis would be missing, what type of cancer it is, etc. I know everyone is scared of cancer, but not all cancer is serious or requires missing a lot of work--I'm not trying to be glib either. I personally think they put "cancer" in the very beginning as a shock factor for the public.

I'm not usually a fan of going to HR, but if one of the employees had a credible reason for being upset about not being able to miss work, that one employee should have gone to HR first before gossipping with the others about how she felt she was being mistreated. This is a general statement as we really don't know what transpired prior to this posted note.

I do think, regardless, that it might be difficult for the three to find new jobs with the publicity they might be getting for quitting in this way. I don't know that a prospective employer would want to have any sort of higher risk for this type of resignation from a future employee, and it's said that past behavior is what is predictive of future behavior.
