Employers who don't offer health insurance

Hello all, ok...my subject says it all. What are your thoughts?

I had an interview today with a real estate company, decent pay and days off, etc. BUT no health insurance. I'm relatively healthy but we all need to see a doc from time to time. I don't know if I'll get the job but I do have a 2nd interview this Thursday so that's promising.

Currently, I have been temping for 18 mos...no health insurance. I've been ok...however, I'm not all that young and you never know. I have explored getting it on my own but $400/mo. is the cheapest I found so far.

It's disappointing to know employers don't offer this esp. since it's so expensive and I just happen to live in one of the top 5 most expensive states to live in :-(

HELP!!!

If you can hold out for a few more months, I believe Health Insurance Exchange (part of AKA "Obamacare") goes live in many states on October 1st.  Just google your state and "health insurance exchange" and check it out.  You may find better deals.  There are also rules that require businesses to offer employee health insurance.  Unfortunately sometimes it is less expensive for the company to pay the fines.

Hi,

Were you interviewing to be a real estate agent? If so, you're considered an independent contractor, i.e. you'll be paid commission only and you're responsible for paying your own taxes, benefits, etc. If that's the case, it's no surprise they didn't offer you health insurance.

If you were interviewing for another position such as receptionist or other administrative position, then they may not have to offer you health insurance because they have fewer than 50 payroll employees (not independent contractors).

Wisdomtooth, I was interviewing for an Admin job. It didn't occur to me that there could be less than 50 so I guess that's why they don't provide it. Thank you!
