jobless and depressed for over a year

Just needing to let off steam, I guess. Last year in Jan., I got pg and dh got laid off at the same time. I had to finish working at the beginning of March last year, since the work was dangerous for someone pg (I worked on an oil rig). Now dd is 6 months old, and neither of us has had a job since then. I can't go back to my old job, especially not with a baby, since it takes me away from home for weeks at a time. My dh was a software developer/programmer. He's been hunting high and low, cannot seem to get ANYTHING! And this is in a city where they say the computer job market is booming. He's had many interviews, never a job. The last one was just heartbreaking. He thought this was finally it, was sure he'd get it, had a great interview, knew several people at the company, was interested in and enjoyed the products they made even (they write computer games). But he didn't get it. Pogey has run out, as have my savings. We are selling the car, and looks like we have to sell the house too, but then what? I just don't know what we're going to do from here. I know there are a lot of others in similar situations, what have you done to cope? I"m at the end of my rope :(
I had a good interview Monday but now I'm so scared that like all the rest of the good interviews the news will be they hired someone else. I did my best, but meanwhile I just TRY to keep at it.
People say tomorrow will be better, and "the best is yet to come", but things don't improve so I can relate to what you're saying and feeling.
Wish I had the answers, sorry.
I can offer no solution but tell you to keep your head up. What an awful time with 9/11, the war and just an awful economy anyway. Please know you're not alone. I'm here if u want to chat.
hey earthgirl...
i am sure this makes you so angry you want to break every dish in the house to get out the frustration (i know i do, but then i'd have to go buy new dishes and i don't have a job to get money to buy new dishes !!!)... sorry i can only offer the words "i know how you feel", but i truly do...those words and a token will get you on the subway in nyc...i've been looking since the end of 2001...
the kicker is employers are looking for people with a "stable job history" and most times a red flag goes up when they see a large employment gap...you go to temp agencies and they can't offer anything...you want to work so you won't have an employment gap (as well as support yourself), but then you can't find work if you tried because everyone else is out there looking as well, so then you keep getting passed over because you have an employment gap...it's a vicious circle...try telling that to bill collectors...they laugh !!!...at least they have a job...
how do you break out of it ?...i wish i had an easy answer for you...maybe we should ask the president to include all the unemployed in his billion dollar iraqi war support plan...our lives need serious rebuilding as well...
keep your head up girl...if it means anything, know that you're not the only one
We're all with you! Take care of that brand new baby and keep your spirits up. This too will pass :)
Best Wishes,
Lynn
Hugs to all :)
I have faith that eventually she will be on top again. But meanwhile I know it's tough.
