Do you ever feel that the only way to find a job is through who you know?  What avenues have you taken advantage of in order to get your name known to a company?

I believe I got my first job out of college based on my major. But that was back in 1989 too. For the second job I got in my industry, I got a foot in the door through a former co-worker, but I still needed to prove what I could do. For my current job, I got lucky. I had my resume posted on a few sites that specialized in my industry, market research. I was contacted to do some contract work, but it wasn't enough to be full time. After a few months, they had an opening and my resume was still on the boss's desk. He called me and the rest is history.
