The following article from AOL has some pretty interesting suggestions on networking, places you might not have thought of such as the gym, the dog park, even Twitter:

What do you think about their suggestions?

I met people on a trip I took by myself to Seattle years ago. I've kept in touch with two of them via Facebook, and when one had an interview in my city, he reached out to see if we could get lunch while he was in my state. I was actually traveling for work at that point, but when I was recently looking for work and posted on Facebook about interviews, he asked if I would be interested in relocating to be near him. It wasn't in any romantic sense--he's married and has two kids, a beautiful family, and we're not super close in age. In any case, he said he'd be happy to forward my resume at his university for me. While I ended up getting a new position elsewhere, I was grateful for his offer. You can network in more unusual ways :)
