I live in New York State & I am trying to figure out what min. wage is for a waitress who makes tips (of course). I tried to Google it but the results were confusing - there were 2 different wages - one in the $2 range & one in the $5 range.  Can somebody please explain/tell me what min wage for waitress in NY State?  Thanks.

I've lived in NYC and suburbs all my life and this is a difficult question to answer.  Reason is wages for upstate New York will be less than wages near New York City.  In addition, well known and popular restaurants in New York City and suburbs will pay more than mediocre restaurants.  Don't expect a 5 star restaurant to pay the same as a 2 star restaurant.  Also what about all the fast food outlets?  Those earn minimum wage.  And you have everything in between.  If you are really skilled and talented, I would work at one of the 5 star restaurants.  At least the business will be thriving for a long time and the clientele will be repeat customers with money to spend.

Hi, here's the page that talks about minimum wage as well as the various allowances for service industry.

https://labor.ny.gov/workerprotection/laborstandards/workprot/minwage.shtm

I'd also assume that NYS is different than NYC — at least that has always been my experience.
