What do you think? Have you come across double standards at work?

Stephanie, do you offer your opinion without being asked or do you keep it to yourself? I'm wondering if you do keep it to yourself when not asked if you feel intimidated by your coworkers, female and/or males.
I haven't personally felt that much of a double standard necessarily in most of my workplaces. It might be because I'm in an industry where there are many working women.

Hi Liz, I would say things are pretty normal with my coworkers and I do offer suggestions and my opinion. With the bosses, in a one on one situation, we have regular dialog too. It's during the client meetings/ entertainment events where the work related topics are kinda like "remain quiet until asked". When I first started chiming in I would be talked over and my thoughts completed by my boss. After several different occassions of this, I understood how it is. The other frustrating thing is the "drink service". Sure I am young, fit and take care in my appearance but why am I mostly called upon for delivering coffee and water to conference rooms? There are other girls who could do this and certainly the guys could handle it, at least for their own meetings.
I'm glad you keep offering your opinion :) It does sound like you just have to play that game a bit in meetings, but I'm glad it seems you have good dialogue with your bosses in one-to-one situations--I think that must show that they respect your input.
As far as the drink runs, maybe you're wearing too sensible of shoes? :) Have you ever declined getting drinks, maybe by saying you are currently focused on a different, but seemingly more important task like a follow up email? I wouldn't want your coworkers to think that you have nothing better to do than fetch coffee. On the other hand, if you sometimes look at it as a chance to do something different and a bit more active and like it, then maybe just try to think of the drink runs that way more often.
Hope you're enjoying the new year!
