Briefly, I was laid off from full time employment in retail after 13 yrs. so I'm used to receiving a weekly paycheck.  Since being laid off April 1st, I received my real estate license & working hard to start my business meaning I'm now self employed.  Legally, I'm an independent contractor.  Anyway, the severance money I received from my former job was used to pay various mandatory fees.  I don't have much in cash & it will be a while before I get a commission.  So what do self employed people do to get cash until they earn money from the business.  I'm marketing or branding myself a lot & I'm wearing the same dress or business suit every day to save on clothes shopping.  I own 1 pair of shoes.  Remember in retail, I never needed business clothes.  Just wore the company shirt & black pants & flat shoes.  I'd like to know what is an appropriate amount to spend during the 1st yr. you're starting your own business.  This is real estate, so my main expenses is gas, business cards & continuing ed. classes or training.

Are you collecting unemployment compensation?  I think you could still collect even if you are self employed but you have to report any income you receive.  I was collecting & self employed but not receiving regular income so if I got income I reported it and they deducted it from the check or didn't pay me that week.  Also could you get a part time job to help out while you are waiting to receive your commissions?
