Hello Everybody!

I was hoping there might be a couple Virtual Assistants on here. I'd love to hear some information on how you got started. I don't have any specialized areas - real estate or law - but feel I could provide some great general services - editing, spreadsheets, correspondence, etc.

I've already created some flyers and thought about hanging them at the local libraries, but am concerned about where to go from there. I hate to waste money sending out mailers without an idea on who to send them to or if they might work. Similarly, I don't want to email businesses only to have them turned off by that tactic.

Any ideas??
Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the board! Thanks for joining us :-)

What about contacting some local businesses and ask if they would be interested in your services and then send them the information? That way you will know if they are interested before you take the time/resources to send the information.

Personally, I think that emailing is a great method of advertising. I have received several business contacts that way.

Has anyone experienced a negative feedback to sending emails?

I hope you hear from some of our VA's and receive great feedback :) And again----welcome!!

Thanks for your input, Melissa. I sucked it up and sent out about 150 emails this morning. My targets were members of the local chamber of commerce - at least the ones with emails listed on their own personal websites. I wanted to stay relatively local so that I can meet with prospective clients in person. I hate the thought of "cold calling", I've done it before in a previous job and the negative reactions from some people just effect me too much....

But, I cannot be paralyzed by the "what ifs" - that's why I went ahead and sent the emails.

Any other ideas out there??

Thank you so much for the reply! Sounds like you took some great ideas and turned them into success for yourself!

I've thought about posting on craigslist. My main concern, however, is scammers/people who don't pay. Have you had any problems with that? How do you typically accept payment? By check, before you start, when work is complete, etc, etc? Also, for typing work, do you still charge hourly, or do you propose a general estimate upfront, or charge per keystroke?

I'm ready to move forward with all of this, but would love to be prepared in advance for any possible issues that will creep up.
Thank you for all you advice!
